I met Quincendrone Rose in a Mexican canteena with Cadmium Yellow Deep.
And Permanent Purple Madder save in a hammock by a creek.
Dioxine Purple lays foundations on a canvas half asleep,
While permanent Green light tends the Vines of Menzies Retreat.
Dark foliage hides glimpses of a wayward Pthalo Blue,
And the coopers barrels show glimpses of where Raw Umber once passed though,
The blacksmiths rings, forged by the larrikin Hookers deep green hue,
Have long since been dry brushed by the ways of Cobalt Blue
And lying in the dust, of the Australian Outback dream,
Red Oxide and Naples yellow are awashed by Yellow green.
The Spinifex and grey gums are tended by paynes grey
Where Red gold and Pthalo Aqua highlight ruts along the way.
And, yet here in the Coonawarra, where I’m just passing through,
The gum trees and the heat haze touched by olive greens and hues,
Are dwarfed by the expanses of titanium white in the arms of permanent blue.
Here life’s canvas is a landscape Terte Verte so to speak
Where grape clusters bring liquids, for Permanent scarlet lake to peak,
While Brilliant orange, dances with red violet as mars violet trys to sleep.
Yes, a quite palette of friends alive in every way, have crossed my path a thousand times to give me a reason to stay.
So. today I thank the Menzies for the coffee and choc muffin serving the colours of my day,
But time awaits no man here, they say, and so vintiners of the Coonawarra, thankyou for the break in the traffic, but I must be on my way.
